Patient Information
STOP and notify your physician if:
  • You are diabetic: your blood sugar could go up dangerously
  • You are on anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin: you could have uncontrolled bleeding in the epidural space leading to paralysis or weakness of your extremities
  • You are on anti-coagulant medications: you could have uncontrolled bleeding in the epidural space leading to paralysis or weakness of your extremities
  • You have a systemic infection: the infection could get worse or could spread to the epidural space
After Surgery

Following your surgery/procedure, you will be brought to the recovery room; this is a monitored care area, so family members are generally not allowed. Your surgeon, pain management physician or anesthesiologist may speak with you after your surgery/procedure.

The time you spend in the recovery room will vary depending upon the type of surgery/procedure performed, the type of anesthesia that was given and your individual needs. Most patients are discharged within one to three hours after surgery and fifteen minutes to one hour after pain management procedure.

Once you are stable you will be offered something to drink and a light snack. The nurse will review post-operative home care instructions with you and/or with your responsible adult caretaker. She will also explain any special post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon regarding diet, rest and medications specific to your surgery/procedure. This is the time for both you and your caretaker to ask any questions you may have.

Since it is normal to feel drowsy after receiving anesthesia, refraining from the following activities for 24 hours after discharge are strongly recommended. Additional instructions may be giving by the surgeon.
  • Driving and operating equipment
  • Signing important papers/documents
  • Making significant decisions
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages or taking any drug without your physician's approval.
If you have unexpected problems, please call your surgeon, primary physician or the emergency center. A nurse from Carrillo Surgery Center will contact you within a few days after your surgery to follow-up and answer any question you may have. Carrillo Surgery Center's goal is to deliver premium care for our patients in a caring and comfortable environment. We invite our former patients to provide feedback on their experience with us. Please feel free to call or write (contact us) our facility administrator to share with him any comments or concerns you have.
